Connecticut-Based Bluegrass Band Earns High Praise from Esteemed Industry Publication

On The Trail, the innovative modern acoustic band from Connecticut, is thrilled to announce that their latest album, "Where Do We Go From Here," has been reviewed by the renowned Bluegrass Unlimited magazine.

The review, featured in the May 2025 edition of Bluegrass Unlimited, offers high praise for the band's musicianship, songwriting, and their unique ability to blend traditional bluegrass elements with contemporary sensibilities.

"Even though this is the band’s debut album, it’s quite accomplished, with strong songwriting, memorable vocal outings, and a solid mastery of their instruments.  The members have a penchant for torchy love songs, such as the heart-torn “What Do I Need With Love,” which particularly showcases Widmer’s remarkable voice, at times reminiscent of John Cowan. "

This recognition from Bluegrass Unlimited, a cornerstone publication in the bluegrass world, underscores On The Trail's growing impact on the genre. Their fearless exploration of bluegrass boundaries, while honoring its heritage, has clearly resonated with critics and fans alike.

Austin Scelzo shared that "To have our music recognized by such a respected voice in the bluegrass community is a significant achievement for us. We worked very hard releasing 'Where Do We Go From Here,' and this validation is truly rewarding."

The album showcases the band's dynamic performances, compelling vocals, and breathtaking instrumental prowess. The album is available on all major streaming platforms and for purchase online.

This positive review in Bluegrass Unlimited further solidifies On The Trail's position as a rising force in modern bluegrass and is sure to introduce their captivating sound to a wider audience.

"The four members of this powerhouse group joined forces when they were all attending Western Connecticut State University. They are: Charlie Widmer, vocals and guitar; Austin Scelzo, vocals and fiddle (also a member of the esteemed New England band Rock Hearts); Tom Polizzi, vocals and mandolin and Matt Curley on bass.

Even though this is the band’s debut album, it’s quite accomplished, with strong songwriting, memorable vocal outings, and a solid mastery of their instruments.  The members have a penchant for torchy love songs, such as the heart-torn “What Do I Need With Love,” which particularly showcases Widmer’s remarkable voice, at times reminiscent of John Cowan.

“Trouble In My Soul” and “Better Days” are cast in a similar groove.  “On the Trail,” on the other hand, is a robust, old-timey-sounding celebration, and “Gospel Plow” is a traditionally flavored spiritual ode. “On The Fence” is a spot-on instrumental. Another highlight is the R&B-tinged confessional “Can’t Get You Out of My Mind.”
